“What became clear to me during my time at CSPT was that the faculty members are, without exception, people who “get it”: who understand that tuning, regulation, repair, and sound business practices all go hand in hand; that the piano must be approached as a whole instrument, and that the end result of all of our work is musical - the ability of the client to experience joy at their fingertips when they sit at a piano that has been maintained with a true sense of Craftsmanship. My goal as a technician is to exemplify the same understanding of the profession demonstrated by my mentors at CSPT.” -- David Dunn, RPT

the theoretical underpinnings and technical aspects of the trade, but
also a veritable gold mine of excellent nuts-and-bolts advice

But what shines the most at CSPT is the absolute dedication to
craftsmanship -- the faculty here are true professionals who are
insistent on maintaining the highest standard in our craft, a
refreshing contrast to today's "just good enough" world of

CSPT gave me the hands-on training from not one, but several incredible technicians that I am proud to know. They showed us that it is good to know how to tune and maintain a piano, but it is better to also know WHY we must tune/maintain pianos. At CSPT, it really is about the whole piano, and I'm proud to tell people about the wonderful, challenging, exhausting and rewarding year I've had here. If you are interested in becoming a high quality piano technician, CSPT is a great place to start that journey."--Jon Farah, RPT

" It is hard for me to imagine what life would be like for me now, loving music as much as I do, were it not for a year of that life spent in the company of great minds (and people of course) such as Paul and Oksana Revenko-Jones, Jeff Cappelli, and Robert Guenther. I can say, with absolute certainty, that I have never met a group of people with as much passion, commitment, and knowledge for the piano as the faculty of the Chicago School for Piano Technology. Though I did not come to grips with the idea till late in the year, I came to realize that the year I spent with them, and for which I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity, is beyond invaluable. Whereas many trades, crafts and professions today are focused on maintaining "trade secrets" and the like, this group at some point must have come to realize, as I did, that knowledge is almost worthless if it is not carried on; their years and years of having learned, erred, and perfected their craft would have been for naught if there aren't any individuals to carry the tune so to speak, and that's where YOU come in."--Paul Frankel

"To anyone who has the passion, drive, and dedication to enter the field of piano technology: CSPT is the place to start. There is not, in my opinion, a more effective method for learning this craft than the hands-on and ears-on approach of a carefully designed curriculum. You will be challenged and encouraged by tenured professionals whose careers are dedicated to the art of piano service. Freshly graduated, I feel the school has given me 5+ years' advantage over those who "learned by doing" or struggled through a correspondence course. The school gives you an opportunity to make your first mistakes - and successes - in an academic setting. When it's time to launch your business, you'll be providing your clients with nothing short of exceptional craftsmanship."--Alexander Lass

"I was once told that the piano is not tuned pure because the sympathetic vibrations of all the notes being in line would throw the piano right out of tune. I have since been shown the light of Equal Temperament at CSPT. In just under a year, I have reached my goal of being able to tune, repair, and regulate the piano. I would not be at the level of competency I am without the school, my instructors, and classmates. I have witnessed first-hand how my new-found skills and abilities have put me light years ahead of a self-study method. The wealth of information I obtained at the school has been invaluable in my pursuit of a piano tuning career. Robert Guenther, the tuning instructor, once told me that "the life of a piano tuner is a marathon, not a sprint." I have since taken up running with a tuning hammer in hand."--Zach LaMotte

CSPT provides each student with all of the information and resources necessary to become a well-qualified technician in 11 short months, and the Advanced Curriculum provides the opportunity to take those studies even further. "At CSPT, I learned that it is not only the piano that we tune, but ourselves as well.
In my daily interactions with pianos, I draw upon the valuable skills and advice imparted to me by the faculty members of CSPT, who each individually showed concern for the progress being made within the program, as well as for my personal well-being.
I found the experience of joining other students from across the world in the common study of piano technology to be particularly unique, and have no doubt that the friendships established among my fellow classmates will stand the test of time.
For these reasons and many others, I am able to wholly encourage aspiring technicians to consider the curricula offered at CSPT."--Ryan Ellison

"My time at CSPT was some of the best in my life. With 24/7 access to the school and an almost unlimited supply of knowledge, information and materials at my fingertips, I was able to study, work and practice all night and into the morning. An incredible faculty that are willing to help with anything and everything you would need, they became friends. Their tough love and passion for piano technology and teaching forces you to become the best you can be. I wish I could continue going to The Chicago School for Piano Technology as the mountains of wisdom and knowledge that the teachers have to offer simply can't be absorbed in one year. I look forward to an amazing career in piano technology filled with problems I will have to solve and beautiful sounds that I will help people create."--Brad Huffman

"Anyone considering becoming a piano technician will be hard-pressed to find a better route to achieving that goal than enrolling in the Chicago School for Piano Technology. I will forever cherish the time that I spent there. In everything from the curriculum and teachers, to the space and access provided, CSPT consistently went beyond my expectations. The community at CSPT very quickly became like family, and the space a second home. It was a privilege and truly a pleasure to have been in the company of such luminaries in the field of piano technology."--Omer Jamil

"I have found a piano at my fingertips to be a vehicle of ecstatic contemplation. My studies at CSPT cultivated a holistic and sophisticated understanding of the instrument that I could not have previously imagined, which is exactly what I had hoped to find there. What I hadn't expected to find after many years of dedicated musical study, however, was a new set of ears with which to sense the mysterious beauty of sound itself. The technological wizardry of sound production found within a piano is exciting to behold, but the magic of sound reception found within ourselves is technology of the highest order, and I am very fortunate to have encountered both at CSPT.
I graduated in August 2012 and am currently an intern piano technician at Northwestern University. I have recently joined the Piano Technician's Guild as an associate member and have registered my business under the name 'Harmonic Resolution Piano Service'."--Patrick McNurlen

"My year at CSPT has been a gift, a time of great fulfillment and inspiration. Aristotle said that "Quality is not an act, it is a habit” and the faculty members at CSPT embody that spirit of quality and instill in their students the desire to develop the best possible skills (habits) and depth of knowledge. As I move into life beyond this incredible year, I know that I’ve received a solid foundation in piano technology enabling me to solidly begin my life as a piano technician and build a happy future upon it. It has been a privilege to be mentored by some of the finest technicians in this field who have the generosity to nurture a new generation of technicians as they learn and hone their craft. Their enthusiasm for all things piano has been incredibly inspiring."--Richard Beebe
