“What became clear to me during my time at CSPT was that the faculty members are, without exception, people who “get it”: who understand that tuning, regulation, repair, and sound business practices all go hand in hand; that the piano must be approached as a whole instrument, and that the end result of all of our work is musical - the ability of the client to experience joy at their fingertips when they sit at a piano that has been maintained with a true sense of Craftsmanship.  My goal as a technician is to exemplify the same understanding of the profession demonstrated by my mentors at CSPT.” -- David Dunn, RPT

"I found the Chicago School for Piano Technology to be a terrific
choice to prepare for a career as a piano technician.  The curriculum
is very well thought-out; it not only includes thorough coverage of
the theoretical underpinnings and technical aspects of the trade, but
also a veritable gold mine of excellent nuts-and-bolts advice
regarding the practical realities of running a piano service business.
But what shines the most at CSPT is the absolute dedication to
craftsmanship -- the faculty here are true professionals who are
insistent on maintaining the highest standard in our craft, a
refreshing contrast to today's "just good enough" world of
mass-produced goods and cookie-cutter services.   I would not hesitate
to recommend CSPT to anyone who wants to delve deeply into the unique
world of piano technology."--Andrew Cherry

" It is hard for me to imagine what life would be like for me now, loving music as much as I do, were it not for a year of that life spent in the company of great minds (and people of course) such as Paul and Oksana Revenko-Jones, Jeff Cappelli, and Robert Guenther. I can say, with absolute certainty, that I have never met a group of people with as much passion, commitment, and knowledge for the piano as the faculty of the Chicago School for Piano Technology. Though I did not come to grips with the idea till late in the year, I came to realize that the year I spent with them, and for which I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity, is beyond invaluable. Whereas many trades, crafts and professions today are focused on maintaining "trade secrets" and the like, this group at some point must have come to realize, as I did, that knowledge is almost worthless if it is not carried on; their years and years of having learned, erred, and perfected their craft would have been for naught if there aren't any individuals to carry the tune so to speak, and that's where YOU come in."--Paul Frankel

"To anyone who has the passion, drive, and dedication to enter the field of piano technology: CSPT is the place to start.  There is not, in my opinion, a more effective method for learning this craft than the hands-on and ears-on approach of a carefully designed curriculum.  You will be challenged and encouraged by tenured professionals whose careers are dedicated to the art of piano service.  Freshly graduated, I feel the school has given me  5+ years' advantage over those who "learned by doing"  or struggled through a correspondence course.  The school gives you an opportunity to make your first mistakes - and successes - in an academic setting.  When it's time to launch your business, you'll be providing your clients with nothing short of exceptional craftsmanship."--Alexander Lass

thoughts upon starting my year at the Chicago School for Piano
Technology.  Learning the craft of piano technology was a radical
shift for me in my life and the case would probably be the same for
many considering this schooling program.  I came to pursue the

The school supplied not only the knowledge and instruction during classes, but also the time and space for practice (A LOT of practice!) Because of my time at the school I now stand confidently before my clients for the jobs that I know well, and I have a strong, friendly support system for the jobs that might be more ambitious. I feel blessed to have had such a great resource so close to home."--Jim Rielley

"My experience at The Chicago School for Piano Piano Technology was an experience that I will never forget. The faculty passed on their knowledge to us in a way that was creative, practical, and profound. Before I came to the school I had no previous experience working with pianos, but now I have the knowledge and skills I need in order to survive and make a living in this economy. The lessons I learned were not only about how to tune or fix a piano, but how to be professional and behave appropriately in a clients home, and in everyday life. Every minute at the school was a learning experience in one way or another. My intelligence was insulted, but my mind was enlightened, and I now have a solid foundation for my future."--Salem Settlemeyer

The combination of class size, hands on time and a faculty that is truly passionate about what they do was exactly what I'd hoped to find, and helped lay a solid foundation for my new career. The year was challenging and intense, but immensely rewarding. "I was once told that the piano is not tuned pure because the sympathetic vibrations of all the notes being in line would throw the piano right out of tune. I have since been shown the light of Equal Temperament at CSPT. In just under a year, I have reached my goal of being able to tune, repair, and regulate the piano. I would not be at the level of competency I am without the school, my instructors, and classmates.  I have witnessed first-hand how my new-found skills and abilities have put me light years ahead of a self-study method.  The wealth of information I obtained at the school has been invaluable in my pursuit of a piano tuning career. Robert Guenther, the tuning instructor, once told me that "the life of a piano tuner is a marathon, not a sprint."  I have since taken up running with a tuning hammer in hand."--Zach LaMotte

"At CSPT, I learned that it is not only the piano that we tune, but ourselves as well.

In my daily interactions with pianos, I draw upon the valuable skills and advice imparted to me by the faculty members of CSPT, who each individually showed concern for the progress being made within the program, as well as for my personal well-being.

I found the experience of joining other students from across the world in the common study of piano technology to be particularly unique, and have no doubt that the friendships established among my fellow classmates will stand the test of time.

For these reasons and many others, I am able to wholly encourage aspiring technicians to consider the curricula offered at CSPT."--Ryan Ellison

With 24/7 access to the school and an almost unlimited supply of knowledge, information and materials at my fingertips, I was able to study, work and practice all night and into the morning. An incredible faculty that are willing to help with anything and everything you would need, they became friends. "I have found a piano at my fingertips to be a vehicle of ecstatic contemplation. My studies at CSPT cultivated a holistic and sophisticated understanding of the instrument that I could not have previously imagined, which is exactly what I had hoped to find there. What I hadn't expected to find after many years of dedicated musical study, however, was a new set of ears with which to sense the mysterious beauty of sound itself. The technological wizardry of sound production found within a piano is exciting to behold, but the magic of sound reception found within ourselves is technology of the highest order, and I am very fortunate to have encountered both at CSPT.

I graduated in August 2012 and am currently an intern piano technician at Northwestern University. I have recently joined the Piano Technician's Guild as an associate member and have registered my business under the name 'Harmonic Resolution Piano Service'."--Patrick McNurlen

"Chicago is magical. Living in Chicago for a year is just like a dream come true. The school itself is the best school I have ever been to. I came to the school as a Piano Performance major and little did I know that I will learn so much more than I have ever thought. The curriculum is detailed and demanding but the teachers and friends here are very encouraging. After a year of schooling here, the knowledge I have learned makes me a well-rounded piano technician and musician. I will definitely encourage those who wants to be a piano technician to come to this school."--Michelle Toe

"I was pondering a career change when the it randomly occurred to me that being a piano tuner might be kind of cool. Prior to attending CSPT, I hadn't so much as touched a tuning lever, but within 11 months I was ready to head out into the field with full confidence in my ability to tune and service pianos. There was an incredible amount of information to absorb in that time, and the dedication required almost made it seem like a full time job, but I truly enjoyed every minute of it. The instructors all gave such wonderful explanations and demonstrations of everything, and the practical, hands-on approach was perfect for really getting involved and learning the craft."--Adam Przybyla

"My year at CSPT was one of the most intense, interesting, and useful years of my life. The staff really dedicated themselves to giving me a solid basis of training in all the fundamental areas of piano tech: tuning, stringing, repair, and regulation, both grand and upright. The facilities at CSPT are ideal for the hands-on training that is emphasized there; the use of jigs, models, and older pianos frees the student to develop new skills without fear of making a horrible mistake on somebody's brand-new Steinway! One big bonus of the curriculum was the business class--the instructors teamed up to give us dozens of priceless tidbits of advice, which could otherwise only be gained from years of experience. There really couldn't be a better way to launch yourself into a piano service career than attending CSPT."--Tim Wilson
